Yet what if this isn’t a collapse for the sake of collapse? What if what we’re living through is part of a larger rhythm—an ancient pulse that has carried humanity through countless rises and falls?
The Mayan calendar offers one such lens. And when I first studied it, what struck me wasn’t doom or fear, but the reminder that history itself moves in cycles, and those cycles carry an inherent rightness—even when we don’t yet see it.
The Sixth Wave of Time
The Mayans described vast waves of time, each shaping human consciousness and the balance of power on Earth. One of these, the Sixth Wave, began in 3115 BCE and has alternated between “light” ages that favor the West and “dark” ages that shift power to the East.
-
Peaks (Light Ages): Western empires thrive—Rome, Britain, the U.S.
-
Valleys (Dark Ages): Eastern powers rise—Byzantium, the Islamic caliphates, the Mongols, and today, China and its allies.
The last Western-dominant peak ended in 2011. Since then, we’ve been descending into a valley. What looks like a decline for the U.S. is simply the pendulum swinging back East.
Why It Feels So Personal
This isn’t only about politics or empires—it’s about consciousness itself. The “light” of the Western peak fostered rationality, innovation, and expansion. As we move into a valley, perception shifts. Truth feels less absolute, ethics blur, and uncertainty grows.
That’s why we see so much questioning, mistrust, and even distortion of reality. It’s disorienting. And yet, it’s also natural. Humanity has walked through valleys before.
The Rightness in the Rhythm
What helps me breathe easier is remembering that:
-
This isn’t random chaos—it’s part of a larger design.
-
The decline of one empire makes space for new forms of unity and power to emerge.
-
Even the “darkness” carries wisdom, because it pushes us to grow in ways light alone cannot.
We may not like what the East looks like right now, but history teaches that the pendulum keeps swinging. This is not an end, but a passage.
Reflection for Us All
So how do we live in such a time? We can:
-
Release the idea that the West must always dominate.
-
Soften our grip on certainty and practice flexibility.
-
Trust that humanity is being reshaped in ways we cannot yet see.
Most of all, we can remind ourselves that there is an inherent rightness to these cycles. They are bigger than any one nation or generation. And even if the path feels uncomfortable, we are still being carried by a cosmic rhythm designed to move us forward.
Closing
The Mayans saw time not as linear, but as a great spiral of creation. Where we are now may feel like decline, but it is also the seedbed of what comes next. And when we remember that truth, even the darkness holds a kind of light.
